BPL: 38 goals in seven matches

Tuesday, May 24, 2011

Round 12 of the Brisbane Premier League saw an incredible 38 goals scored in just seven fixtures. The top three sides Wolves FC, Olympic FC and Rochedale contributed 20 goals combined to race nine points clear of the chasing pack.

University of Queensland vs Redlands United
4-1
University of Queensland Bounced back from last week’s narrow 1-0 loss with a dominant 4-1 win against an out of sorts Redlands side on Saturday night.

Both sides needed a win to get their inconsistent seasons back on track and to consolidate their mid table positions on the ladder.

After a see-sawing opening to the match, University capitalised on a horror ten minutes for Redlands scoring three goals just before half time to well and truly take control of the match.

Redlands looked to bounce back quickly and a Stephen Homer goal only one minute into the second half gave them hope of a comeback.

However University didn’t take long to claim the three points when Daniel Stewart-Mclean scored his second goal of the match in the 53rd minute to give them a 4-1 win.

Wolves FC vs Mt Gravatt
9-1
Mt Gravatt may have wished they didn’t turn up to face Wolves FC on Saturday when the undefeated table toppers put nine goals on the travelling Mt Gravatt side to further emphasise their position as the best team in the competition.

Wolves FC have had no real competition so far this season, averaging five goals a game and conceding only eight.

Mt Gravatt could only last 16 minutes before Wolves took the lead and the home side added three more to go into half time with a 4-0 lead.

The second half was much more of the same for Mt Gravatt with Wolves FC hitting the back of the net another five times with goals to Kado Aoci, Alex Janovsky, Trent Clulow and Patrick Hopkins.

Mt Gravatt managed a consolation goal in the 86th minute however they will surely move their focus to bouncing back next week.

Pine Hills vs Eastern Suburbs
2-7
Pine Hills' season from hell continues with the club falling to their ninth consecutive loss against a ruthless Eastern Suburbs side on Saturday.

Both teams traded goals in the opening 30 minutes with goals to James Gunn and Jordan Farina for Pine Hills and a double to Ryan Stenhouse for Eastern Suburbs; however it was the away side that took control of the game.

A double to Xavier Lopez five minutes before the break gave Eastern Suburbs a two goal buffer at the half with Pine Hills struggling to keep up with their opposition.

Eastern Suburbs wrapped up the win in the second half with goals to Justin McMullen and Joachim Klein taking them to fourth on the Brisbane Premier League table.

Capalaba vs Rochedale Rovers
2-4
A Tim Smits hat-trick maintained Rochedale’s undefeated start to the season and keeps them in touch with Wolves FC at the top of the Brisbane Premier League table.

Smits took only ten minutes to give Rochedale the lead away from home when he found space in the box before dispatching his powerful shot past Capalaba 'keeper Luke Muir.

Once again Smits was in the heart of the action soon after and was taken down in the box, with Rovers captain Terry Hughes dispatching the penalty to double the lead.

Capalaba struck back through Jake Sherwood and Grant Marshall, however a second half double to Tim Smits gave the mercurial striker his hat-trick and Rovers the win.

Rochedale must now prepare for what should be one of their toughest encounters of the season coming up against Wolves FC in a battle for top spot.

Souths United vs Olympic FC
2-3
A final minute goal to Aleksander Panic has given Olympic FC an edge of the seat victory against a strong Souths United outfit on Saturday.

Handing out an incredible eight yellow cards and one red, referee Nathan Macdonald had major bearing on the match which saw Olympic stay in touch with the top three teams.

After taking the lead after only two minutes, Souths United looked set to upset one of the competitions front runners however a double to Michael Butters and Panic’s last minute goal gave Olympic a come from behind victory.

Both sides face tough encounters in the coming round with a trip to Peninsular Power for Olympic FC and Souths facing a desperate Pine Hills side on Sunday.

Brisbane City vs North Pine
1-0
Brisbane City grinded their way to a 1-0 victory at home in a defensive encounter against North Pine

With both City and North Pine just outside the playoff positions on the table it was a must win game for either side.

Brisbane City took the lead early in the piece following a great finish from striker Justin Austin after some skillful lead up play from winger Kyang Jeong.

North Pine had a number of opportunities to equalize however the play of Brisbane City goalkeeper Aurelien Berson ensured that the home side took home the points.

City has a tough trip to Rochedale next week while North Pine face fellow newly promoted side University of Queensland.

Taringa Rovers vs Peninsular Power
0-2
Peninsular Power made it two wins in a row with a quality performance in a 2-0 win against Taringa Rovers on Sunday.

Both sides could not break the deadlock in the first half in what was an evenly match first 45 minutes.

Power took the upper hand in the second half pushing forward and getting the desired result in the 59th minute when Dominik Hudak finally put points on the board for the away team.

The Redcliffe based side wrapped up the result in the 84th minute to take home the points and continue their rise up the table.
