VPL: St Albans continue to struggle

BENTLEIGH GREENS – HEIDELBERG UNITED 1-1
In a match that saw two red cards, Bentleigh Greens denied an inform Heidelberg United side from taking another three points. After a goalless first half striker Saso Aleksovski with a stunning volley provided the opener for the visitors. The home side then equalised with just under 10 minutes to go after a great counter-attack was finished off by Stuart Nicholson. Red cards were handed to Webster from Bentleigh, given two yellows in 40 seconds, and Ederaro of Heidelberg, given a straight red.

RICHMOND – HUME CITY 1-3
Hume City has extended its run of five games without defeat after a convincing 3-1 away win against last season finalists Richmond. The away side took the lead through Richie Cardozo in the 8th minute doubled its advantage on the half hour mark through Andrew Vlahos. However former Hyundai A-League player Michael Ferrante kept the home sides hopes alive with a goal in the 36th minute, a minute after Fabio Dilizia was given his marching orders for the visitors. Although playing with ten men, Hume showed what they are capable of doing this season with youngster Atilla Ofli scoring in his second consecutive match after the Richmond defence failed to clear a cross. Richmond are now 10 points off the fifth finals spot, while Hume City are second - one point behind leaders Oakleigh.

GREEN GULLY CAVALIERS – OAKLEIGH CANNONS 1-1
Oakleigh Cannons failed to hold onto its one goal advantage as Green Gully held the leaders on Simon Storey’s first start since signing from North Queensland Fury. The visitors started to take control of possession in the first period and their hard work paid off in the 40th minute when Jimmy downey riggled past the defence and coolly slotted the ball past goalkeeper Roganovic. The hosts however managed to pull one back in the 74th minute as substitute Mathew Sanders scored with his first touch of the game. The point leaves Gully six points behind fifth-placed South Melbourne. Oakleigh Cannons remain top however their lead has been slashed to one.

ST.ALBANS SAINTS – DANDENONG THUNDER 0-3
Dandenong have continued on its journey to reclaim top spot with a comfortable three nil victory over bottom placed St. Albans. The home sides chances of remaining in the top flight look increasingly unlikely as they remain winless on only three points. After a scrappy opening, Dandenong took the lead through Liam Kearney after a low cross by youngster Mathew Theodore. For the second, Kearney returned the favour as his cross found an unmarked Theodore in the six yard box who easily slotted the ball past Pavlovic. The Thunder added insult to injury as Luke Sherbon scored a wonderful free kick in injury time. Thunder are currently three points off the pace while the Saints are nine points from safety.

MELBOURNE KNIGHTS – NORTHCOTE 2-2
After a miserable week off the pitch the Knights had a chance to get back on track, however missed chances in this contest cost them two points. The home side had taken the lead in the 12th minute as Anthony Colosimo provided a great through ball to younger brother Jacob, who brilliantly found the back of the net. The visitors hit back within twenty minutes as Hayden D’Agostino provided a beautiful cross which found James Kalafatidis who finished with a powerful header. In the second half youngster Jacob Colosimo scored his second for the afternoon in the 55th minute with a chip over goalkeeper Petropoulos. However the visitors yet again equalised, this time only two minutes later through a Konstantinidis header after a cross by Glen Trifiro. Towards the end of the game both sides had their chances however failed to capitalise and take the three points, therefore having to settle for a point a piece.

SOUTH MELBOURNE – SPRINGVALE 1-0
South Melbourne welcomed back some key players in O’Dor and Milicevic, who missed the last few weeks through injury and suspension respectively. The home side found themselves back to winning ways with a 1-0 victory over eleventh placed Springvale. A Krncevic header half an hour into the contest was enough to give the home side a vital win and much needed three points. With the win South Melbourne go back to fifth place on 24 points while Springvale remain on twelve points in eleventh place.
