Knights down at the Gully two nil

On paper eighth placed Green Gully hosting tenth placed Melbourne Knights didn't seem like a massive game, but three points were vital for both teams - to stay in the finals race and move out of the relegation dogfight respectively.

The match wasn't even two minutes old when Green Gully signing Simon Storey put the Cavaliers in front from a mistake by the Knights defense. Storey's finish was top quality but the Knights were ruing not being switched on from the first whistle, left to chase the game for the rest of the day.

Five minutes later Storey's day was ended after picking up an injury and was subbed off for Green Gully favorite Graham Hockless.

Knights supporters were again out in force, as you would expect from a team with such a large and parochial supporter base. And they would have been pleased with how Yusuf Yusuf (or Yusuf squared) played down the right flank.

Despite the scoreline the Knights had the better of Green Gully for the remainder of the first half in a game that was played at a very high tempo with plenty of physicality.

The second half was a tighter affair with the Knights having the better of possession but never really looking like finding the back of the net - only Josip Magdic forced the opposition 'keeper to make a save.

Green Gully put the game away on 76 minutes when Hockless was awarded a free kick 30 meters out from goal. The free kick was whipped in and evaded everyone to find the back of the net and break the hearts of the the Knights fans who were already incensed by the free kick.

Gully were able to control possession for the remaining 15 minutes, the expected Knights onslaught never came leaving the once powerhouse club winless in over two months and also firmly in the relegation battle. After their 2-0 win Green Gully move within three points of the top five with a game against league easy beats St Albans next weekend.
