QSL: Strikers teach QAS a lesson

Tuesday, May 31, 2011

In Round Eleven Brisbane Strikers and Sunshine Coast rose above the rest, asserting their dominance in the build up to finals football.

Capricorn Cougars VS Gold Coast Stars 1-1

Gold Coast Stars have displayed another inconsistent performance in the QSL with a disappointing 1-1 draw against cellar dwellers, Capricorn Cougars.

Goals from Capricorn’s Stross and the Stars’ Prugh, were the only highlights of a fairly lacklustre match.

Playing in Cougar territory, it was Gold Coast’s chance to snare a victory away from home in a match they really should have won. Having drawn however, Gold Coast now slip to sixth on the ladder and with the Whitsunday Miners hot at their heels the Stars' chances at salvaging their season look to be fading.

FNQ Bulls VS Whitsunday Miners 4-2

The Whitsunday Miners’ resurgence in the QSL seems to have come to a grinding holt as they conceded their second straight defeat, going down 4-2 against Far North Queensland.

Always hard to beat at home Far North Queensland brought the goods again, up in Mareeba on Saturday evening.

The Miners were on the verge of a win, looking in charge and leading 2-1 at one stage. However they capitulated under that infamous Bulls pacey and unpredictable forward line.

Ruiz, De Nittis and Coppen scored in the last ten minutes for the Bulls stealing an almost certain victory from Whitsunday.

But the Miners will be looking to return to winning form in next round’s clash against Capricorn.

Sunshine Coast Fire VS NQ Razorbacks 3-1

Sunshine Coast Fire cemented their place at the top of the table defeating the North Queensland Razorbacks 3-1 in Gympie.

An in form Razorbacks side did not take the loss lying down though. The Razorbacks had their fair share of chances and put some continuous pressure on the Fire, in possession.

But Sunshine Coast made their few chances in front of goal count. That man again, Tyson Holmes got another double to his name in the 4th and 58th minute. When Shaun Blackman knocked in another for the Fire in the 72nd minute the game was over.

Young Razorback Josh Evans managed to get a consolation goal late in the match but it was all too late.

Qld Academy Sport VS Brisbane Strikers 1-5

Playing at home at Meakin Park, QAS were keen to rev up their campaign for the QSL title with a win against their closest rival Brisbane Strikers. However it was not their night, enduring a 5-1 thrashing which included two converted penalty spot kicks.

Brisbane had experienced a rough few weeks with a couple of losses but came back determined to get back on track.

QAS again played from the back and when errors crept in they paid the price, with the first goal of the match coming off some unconvincing possession. Strikers Chris Di Sipio pounced on sleepy Academy defence to get the Strikers first.

QAS built up pressure in the back end of the first half to reduce the deficit through Koh Satake making it just 2-1 at the break. But in the second half Strikers completely took the game out of reach.

Sustained pressure from Brisbane smothered QAS’ attack and pushed their defence deep within their own half. Then two almost identical penalties awarded to Brisbane saw Robinson and Burke extend the lead and seal the win for Strikers, in the process regaining second spot on the ladder.
