WASL: Perth SC taste top position, briefly

Western Knights 1-1 Sorrento

Western Knights snatched a point against Sorrento at Nash Field on Saturday afternoon. David Foster put the visitors ahead in the 37th minute heading in from an Adam Luca free kick. Sorrento pressed forward at the end of the first half but Jason Mirco missed the target and Jack Doyle saw his long range effort swing wide. Soon after the break the Knights equalised when Stuart Ferguson tapped in from six yards. Foster squandered a golden opportunity to put his side ahead from the spot but his weak penalty was easily saved by Frazer Siddall. Both sides looked for the winner but none could be found, the match ending 1-1.

Floreat Athena 4-2 Cockburn City

Struggling Cockburn City travelled to E & D Litis Stadium to face a Floreat Athena side whose season has begun to take a turn for the better. Liam Boland scored a first half brace and Miki Vujacic scored one for Floreat to go into the break with a comfortable 3-0 lead. Cockburn refused to give up the game in the second half, striker Rory Feely giving the Cockburn City faithful hope in the 76th minute. But it was short lived when James Isaia restored Athena's three goal buffer eight minutes later. Feely pulled another one back before the final whistle - Floreat continuing their run of good form.

Bayswater City 3-3 Armadale

Frank Drago Reserve saw a six goal thriller between Bayswater City and Armadale. Not only did the goals came in abundance but the cards as well, referee Michael Tolmie showing seven yellow cards and three red in a hard fought encounter. Armadale captain Steve McDonald put his side ahead early in the match powering in a header at the far post after six minutes. Bayswater equalised through Gustavo Marulanda to make it 1-1 at half time. Matt Barlow put Armadale back ahead before Joseph Tumoe levelled the scores again. Ross Diamond received his marching orders on 73 minutes but Bayswater failed to make use of the numerical advantage. The final minutes were enthralling, James Robinson sending Armadale into the lead with two minutes of normal time remaining, then Nicolas Diaz saved the day for Bayswater, equalising deep into stoppage time. Tempers flared and Armadale's Tom Kennedy saw straight red and James Robinson was shown his second yellow.

Mandurah City 0-2 Perth SC

Perth SC moved into top spot for a day following their 2-0 win at Mandurah. Goals from Josh Pereira and Craig Simpson in the first half put Perth in the driving seat heading into half time. Coming out after the break the home side looked to reduce the deficit, Matt Stares’ strike coming off the post and falling to Tom Jones who somehow put his shot over the bar. Substitute Jeff Bright was bundled down in the area only to be denied a penalty by referee Matthew Cheeseman who waved play on. Mandurah couldn't find their goal and Perth went home 2-0 winners.

Balcatta SC 2-0 Stirling Lions

After falling a point behind Perth SC overnight Balcatta didn't want to make that league position permanent going into their local derby against neighbours Stirling Lions. Heroics from Balcatta goalkeeper Lewis Italiano kept the scores level at half time. Balcatta attacked from the get go in the second half and it wasn't long before they went 1-0 ahead when Daniel Neiderberger fired past a despairing Cory Hugo. Jamie Watt wasted a good chance to get Stirling back into the game, putting his shot straight into the arms of Italiano. Ashley Rosindale put the result to rest, slotting away his shot after a rebound from Hugo.

ECU Joondalup 1-0 Inglewood

ECU Joondalup ran out 1-0 winners over Inglewood United at ECU Joondalup Stadium A thanks to a first minute goal from John Thornley. The free flowing attacking football we’re so used to seeing from Inglewood wasn’t on show on Saturday afternoon, as the away side failed to seriously trouble the ECU goal. It wasn’t until ECU went down to ten men that Inglewood were able to create a clear chance, one which was blazed over the bar from all of two yards. 1-0 it finished. A second disappointing result in a row for Shane Pryce’s men.
