BPL: Wolves take eight point lead in front

Tuesday, May 31, 2011

After 13 rounds the Brisbane Premier League is starting to look like a one horse race with Wolves FC taking an eight point lead at the top of the table. Round 13 wasn’t all about Wolves and featured a number of big upsets, including second placed Olympic FC conceding four goals and going down to eight players in one of the rounds most talked about fixtures.

Peninsular Power vs Olympic FC
4-0

In what many Olympic FC fans expected to be an easy three points turned into a nightmare for the boys from Yeronga, not only going down 4-0 to a resilient Peninsular Power side but also having three players sent off including influential defender Hyuksu Seo.

Power took the match to their opponents early scoring after only seven minutes courtesy of some intricate passing from Pablo Aviles and a precision finish from youngster Reagan Alder.

While Olympic had the majority of possession in the first half they could not break down a stout Power defence and were punished early in the second half when Peninsular midfielder Warren Moon unleashed an amazing curling free kick that hit the back of the net from 30 metres out.

It was all downhill for Olympic from here on, referee Adam Kersey sending off defender Blake Charity and Seo in the 69th minute and then Ilkay Gurbuz in the 70th minute for separate incidents in back play.

The home side put the result beyond doubt late in the second half with a double to substitute Matt Hornby helping Power take their win streak to three.

Eastern Suburbs vs Capalaba
2-1

Eastern Suburbs were desperate to remain on top of the tightly contested battle for fourth spot in the table, coming up against an equally determined Capalaba side keen to prove they had what it takes to win away from home.

After a comprehensive 7-2 win against Pine Hills last week, Eastern Suburbs continued their fine form in front of goal taking only 10 minutes for Matthew Boyd to give his side a 1-0 lead.

Eastern Suburbs took their lead into the half time break however it only lasted 60 seconds into the second half when Capalaba’s Anthony Schiavo brought his side back into the match with a great finish in the box taking the scores to 1-1.

However it was Eastern Suburbs that would have the last laugh, giving their fans reason to celebrate in the 70th minute when Brendan Lewandowski’s effort hit the back of the net to gift his side a 2-1 win and all three points to remain in that vital fourth spot on the table.

Redlands vs Taringa Rovers
1-2

Although struggling through a number of recent defeats Taringa Rovers managed to upset a highly touted Redlands side 2-1 away from home to claim their first win in three weeks.

A Jon-Paul Sludden double only five minutes apart had Rovers two goals up inside the first 25 minutes and put Taringa well and truly in the driver’s seat at half time with the scores at 0-2.

It wasn’t until the 70th minute when Redlands finally broke through courtesy of a quality goal from Daniel Tesoro that the home side finally had any slim chances of taking any points from the match.

Although having a number of chances late in the game Redlands could not break down an impenetrable Taringa defence who held out till the final whistle to claim a 2-1 victory.

North Pine vs University Of Queensland
0-1
Only one goal could separate Brisbane Premier League new boys North Pine and UQ, with Uni taking home the points with a 1-0 win away from home.

With both sides currently residing in the final two playoff positions on the ladder the stakes were high with a loss gifting the chasing pack a chance to break into the top six.

In a tough defensive affair it took 37 minutes for UQ to break through, Daniel Stewart-Mclean giving his side a 1-0 lead after some brilliant lead up play.

North Pine had a number of opportunities to tie the ledger however forgot to pack their shooting boots, blasting high and wide numerous times.

Uni held out a final attacking surge from the home side to claim the 1-0 win and cemented their fifth position on the Brisbane Premier League ladder.

Rochedale Rovers vs Wolves FC
0-3
Wolves FC showed why they are already being touted as the heir apparent to the 2011 Brisbane Premier League trophy after easily beating Rochedale 3-0 away from home to give themselves a massive eight point lead from second placed Olympic FC.

In what was built up as one of the matches of the season, both sides went into the match desperate to hold onto their undefeated status.

After a tentative start to the match, Wolves began to flex its attacking muscle through Kado Aoci’s dangerous runs into the box and finally found pay dirt in the 30th minute courtesy of an impressive near post volley to Alex Janovsky.

The second half was much of the same with the Wolves defence holding Rochedale at bay, yet still finding the energy and space to attack.

The away side managed to find the back of the net twice late in the match to claim a 3-0 victory which gives Wolves FC an almost unattainable lead at the top of the table and leaves Rochedale to lick the wounds from their first defeat of the 2011 season.

Mt Gravatt Vs Brisbane City
1-0

Mt Gravatt bounced back from their demoralising 9-1 defeat at the hands of the Wolves FC juggernaut to beat Brisbane City 1-0 in a polished performance from the home side.

Brisbane City on the other hand were fresh from grinding out a hard earned 1-0 win against competition new boys North Pine, buoyed by their strong recent performances.

Mt Gravatt took the game to their opponents early on and soon took the lead when Brandon Hewitson found the back of the net when he unleashed an impressive shot that left City 'keeper Aurelian Berson clutching at thin air.

Mt Gravatt looked to a physical defensive style in the second half and could’ve easily gone a man down with referee Alan Milliner brandishing his yellow card on six occasions.

The tactic seemed to work with city struggling to find any answers when they had the ball, the match ending 1-0 in favour of Mt Gravatt.

Souths United vs Pine Hills
1-1

Competition whipping boys Pine Hills went close to stealing their first win of the season when they travelled to Souths United, however had to settle for a draw in a match which went close to ending in controversy.

Both sides entered the match firmly entrenched at the bottom of the table and their opening exchanges of the match were further testament to their position with neither side able to put more than three passes together.

The home side was the first to score in the 33rd minute when Juso Julardzija poked home from only 3 yards out following a messy scramble in the box to give Souths a 1-0 lead.

Pine Hills managed to strike back only five minutes later with a long range bomb from James Gunn who hammered home from 25 yards out.

Both sides went down to ten men late in the game after Julardzija and Pine Hills’ Gino Invincibile got a little heated following a dangerous tackle.

Souths managed to hold out a late run from Pine Hills as both sides shared the points at fulltime, the match finishing at 1-1.
