Queensland State League: Round Nine

Tuesday, May 17, 2011

Round Nine in the QSL again delivered some shock upsets and close draws. Injuries are also beginning to plague certain sides.

NQ Razorbacks 2 VS Capricorn Cougars 2

On Saturday night, supporters at Brolga Park were treated to an exciting 2-2 draw between hosts, North Queensland Razorbacks and Capricorn Cougars.

Capricorn went oh-so-close to finally notching up their first win of the season, conceding a late goal in the 90th minute.

The Razorbacks drew first blood in the 34th minute through Lee Mayberry, a goal which gave them the upper hand going into the second half. But Capricorn came back with a vengeance.

Quick-fire goals from Capricorn’s Thompson and Stross in the 77th and 79th minute respectively, put the bottom-of-the-table Cougars in the lead. But a desperate fight-back by the much more fancied Razorbacks, led to Bowater’s equaliser in the final stages of the match.

Sunshine Coast Fire 3 VS Bundaberg Spirit 0

Sunshine Coast got back into winning form with a convincing 3-0 win over Bundaberg Spirit on Saturday.

High from their first win of the season last week, Bundaberg were unlucky not to take the lead after an almost certain foul in the box could have seen them get a goal from the penalty spot.

But instead the foul and yellow card went to Bundaberg’s fired up English import, Kallum Nix. It was an unfortunate night for the talented youngster who went off shortly after with a hamstring injury, which is expected to keep him off the pitch for at least a month. Nix’s injury is just one of many player injuries severely hurting Bundaberg’s chances of salvaging their season.

Sunshine Coast responded with two swift goals just before the end of the first half, with dangerman Tyson Holmes, again the culprit. Holmes then finished it off with a goal in the 72nd minute to seal the win.

Whitsunday Miners 2 VS Brisbane Strikers 0

Brisbane Strikers have suffered their second straight loss at the hands of the resurgent Whitsunday Miners, losing 2-0.

Last week the Miners surprised everyone with a shock 1-1 draw against top-of-the-table Sunshine Coast.

They backed it up on Saturday night with an impressive win against Brisbane Strikers, who sit just below Sunshine Coast in second position on the QSL ladder.

Whitsunday not only got the win but kept the normally potent Strikers goal-less.

In a composed display, the increasingly confident Miners have shown significant improvement after a slow start to the season.

Their first goal came in just the 4th minute. Down the right side Whitsunday’s Jamie White outran the defender to cross it into the box where the Strikers defence capitulated under the Miners attacking pressure, conceding an own goal.

From a corner kick in the 14th minute Hooper then confirmed their dominance was no fluke, taking two attempts to knock the ball in from the cross.

Despite getting Matt Thurtell back in the side, Brisbane Strikers had no reply to the Miners’ stoic defence, led at the back by ‘keeper Brad Moss.

Gold Coast Stars 1 VS Queensland Academy of Sport 1

Hosting the Queensland Academy of Sport on Sunday, Gold Coast couldn’t back up their emphatic victory over Strikers last week, instead salvaging a 1-1 draw.

Everyone expected it to be a tight match with fourth on the ladder (Gold Coast) taking on fifth (QAS). And the game didn’t disappoint. After the half the scores were still locked at nil-all, with few chances going either way.

It took until the 68th minute for the first goal to come through QAS goal-scoring machine, Elliot Ronto.

Holding possession it looked as though Academy might just hang on for the win but ten minutes later Gold Coast’s Lewis Marsh got a goal back.

However, neither side could find another goal for the win.
