VPL: Oakleigh Cannons firm top spot

Monday, May 16, 2011

GREEN GULLY – SOUTH MELBOURNE 3-2
South Melbourne have continued their disappointing run of form with another defeat. the loss against Green Gully leaves them with a solitary point from a possible twelve, the defence a huge concern leaking thirteen goals in four games. Goals from Basma, Medjedovic and Sanders were enough to give the home side the win leaving them four points off of the final play-off spot. For the struggling Hella's, a double from the penalty spot by Fernando De Moraes was their only positive for the afternoon.

NORTHCOTE CITY – OAKLEIGH CANNONS 3-4
Oakleigh maintained top spot following a thrilling 3-4 victory over Northcote City thanks to a 92nd minute goal by Dane Milovanovic. City Captain Trent Rixon continued his goal scoring form with a double in the opening 30 minutes, however an own goal just before half time and goals from Rick Diaco and Ante Cicak in the 52nd and 56th minute respectively handed the visitors the lead. Nicholas Curtis got Northcote back on level terms but an injury time winner by Milovanovic all but broke the hearts of the Northcote faithful.

SPRINGVALE EAGLES – BENTLEIGH GREENS 1:1
With only one win in the opening 13 rounds, Springvale yet again failed to get the three points as they were only able to earn their sixth draw of the season. A goal by Milos Lujic in the 30th minute handed the hosts the lead, however the visitors fought back and earned themselves the share of the spoils in the 56th minute courtesy of a Ryan Davidson strike.

HUME CITY – ST.ALBANS SAINTS 4-1
Hume City heaped more misery on the struggling Saints who remain in bottom-place after yet another defeat leaving them winless after 13 rounds. The visitors had a bright start to the contest with a Daniel Visevic penalty after Phillip Riccobene handled the ball. Hume hit back with two goals in the space of four minutes thanks to a header by Dilizia from a Vlahos corner and a Richie Cardozo tap in. The second half wasn’t any better for St. Albans as 17 year old Atilla Ofli doubled the lead and Cardozo completed the victory with his second for the afternoon in injury time.

HEIDELBERG UNITED – RICHMOND 3-1
Richmond got off to a flying start as they took the lead on 40 seconds thanks to a Michael Catalano goal which left the home side stunned. Unfortunately for Richmond though, the lead barely lasted 5 minutes as Evan Christodoulou got the home side back on level terms, before Saso Aleksovski handed United the lead after 11 minutes. Following last week’s 9-0 victory, Heidelberg are brimming with confidence and it was seen in this contest, which Osagie Ederaro wrapped up the victory in the 85th minute. Heidelberg are currently in second place, two points off top spot while last year’s finalists are struggling down in ninth position on 14 points.
