Five star Melbourne Knights

Monday, June 06, 2011

Melbourne Knights hosted Springvale White Eagles at Knights Stadium on Sunday in a crucial relegation battle in the Alanic Victorian Premier League. A sizable crowd was on hand to watch the 10th placed Knights take on the 11th placed White Eagles with the loser almost assured to join St Albans Saints in relegation come seasons end.

Springvale were were going forward with a decent breeze which kept the game scrappy for the majority of the first half. The first real chance fell to Colosimo in the 36th which he put well over the bar.

The White Eagles were lacking bite in the midfield and were playing only Goran Zoric as a lone striker hoping to nick a goal on the counter.

Melbourne Knights on the other hand were winning plenty of the ball in the midfield and a minute into first half stoppage time Colosimo was put through one on one with White Eagles 'keeper Augustin. A further minute later Yusuf Yusuf was put through on the right and he delivered a pin point cross for Mathieu Welmant to head home to end proceedings for the first half.

The Knights came out with a full head of steam in the second half and dominated possession, unlucky not to be two up after 53' when Augustin again saved a one on one chance this time to Welmant.

It wasn't long through before the dam wall broke and Colosimo finally got the goal he deserved on 60' mins with the help from some bad defending, although it is is worth mentioning Augustin again got a hand to the shot.

The Knights faithful were up and about and ten minutes later Colosimo had his second which destroyed Springvale - from then on it was all Melbourne Knights. Magdig clinically tucked away his chance on 83' and Welmant putting the icing on the cake in the 87' to give Melbourne a 5-0 win, their first win in 77 days.

For Springvale it was a soul destroying loss but they have bottom of the table St Albans next round followed by a game against struggling Richmond in which they will want no less than a combined six points from if they are any chance at all of staying in the Victorian Premier League next season.

The Knights have two very winnable games ahead with VTC at home next Monday night followed by a trip to Bentleigh Greens three days later.
