QSL: Round Two Catch Up

Tuesday, June 14, 2011

This weekend of QSL was a catch up of Round 2 matches which were postponed back in March due to poor ground conditions. It gave Sunshine Coast Fire, North Queensland Razorbacks and Bundaberg Spirit a week to rest while the others slogged it out across the state.

Gold Coast Stars 5 VS Capricorn Cougars
5-1

Gold Coast have solidified their spot in third position on the ladder with a 5-1 shellacking of Capricorn Cougars.

Capricorn started out well, and put in a good performance early on, placing pressure on the Stars’ sometimes inconsistent defence.

The Cougars persisted and were rewarded with a brilliant goal from Davy in the 27th minute.

In the second half, Gold Coast came out a different side. It didn’t look like it was long before they would breach the deficit. And it wasn’t.

Felizatto knocked one in the back of the net five minutes after the restart, followed a goal moments later from McCormick. Prugh got yet another double for his team in the 67th and 72nd minutes, before Costello put the icing on the cake with a goal of his own.

Showing plenty of good form, Gold Coast will now travel to North Queensland Razorbacks' home turf for Round 13, in what should be a scintillating match.

Brisbane Strikers VS Queensland Academy of Sport
3-0

Brisbane Strikers and QAS fought a hard first half, where neither side could find a goal. QAS dominated proceedings as the Strikers’ attack seemed absent for most of the term.

But in the second half, Brisbane got into gear. Matt Thurtell got two goals in quick succession, each of which were rather controversial.

Strikers captain, Chris Di Sipio
His first came from a spot-kick penalty, after he was pushed in the back by QAS’ pocket-rocket Jacob McLean. And his second came from a collision between Academy’s ‘keeper and defender, with Thurtell in the middle, able to nudge the ball towards goal. That goal left QAS coach Darren Davies fuming on the sidelines, calling for a foul on the ‘keeper, but the goal stood.

Sean Burke then extended the advantage for Brisbane from close range, with a nice one-two combination with Thurtell.

Scoring all three goals within fifteen minutes, the Strikers held strong for the rest of the match, keeping QAS scoreless, and taking all three points into next week.

Whitsunday Miners VS Far North Queensland Bulls
3-2

With QAS’ loss, Whitsunday have managed to slip into fourth position on the QSL table and appear to be on the rise again.

It was a composed, yet exciting showing from the Miners, taking only two minutes to score their first through Jordan Corte.

But FNQ Bulls are a team that never quit and despite going into the second half a goal down, equalised early into the second to keep the game alive.

The Miners responded well though with two goals from Corte and Aaron Craig, within a few minutes to take the game to 3-1.

Despite a late challenge from the Bulls’ Josiah Rusch who bagged his second, Whitsunday held on for a nail-biting finish.
