Taringa come from behind twice to draw with Capalaba

Tuesday, July 19, 2011

Taringa Rovers came from behind twice to out-muscle fourth placed Capalaba 3-2 at home in a match that had a bevy of twists and turns.

The win sees Taringa go level on points with fifth placed Peninsular Power; however finish the weekend in seventh position on goal difference.

Capalaba raced out of the blocks from the first whistle and forced Taringa to bounce back from an early 1-0 deficit in the fourth minute after Steven Homer pounced on a sloppy back pass from Rovers captain Ben Ryan and shot into the back of the net.

Taringa looked to bounce back straight away and went close courtesy of Kei Yamaguchi volley in the 10th minute that soared inches over the cross bar.

The home side refused to back down after the missed opportunity and were rewarded in the 15th minute when Steven Chester tapped in from close range on the back of a pin point delivery from John Paul Sludden to level the scores at 1-1.

An unfortunate hand ball on the edge of the box only three minutes later from Rovers saw the home side picking the ball out of the the net when Joel Drewek’s well hit free kick was too much for Taringa 'keeper Nick Tubbs and saw the away side reclaim their lead at 2-1.

Following a hard fought 16 minutes where both sides found the going tough through midfield, it was Taringa that emerged with the spoils when Jaspal Benning finished off a slick passing movement to coolly finish past the outstretched arms of Capalaba shot stopper Luke Muir to tie the scores up at 2-2.

Both sides went into half time at level pegging and desperately looking to solidify their defence in a match that was quickly becoming a festival of goals.

Taringa came out of half time looking a much stronger side starting the second stanza of play by immediately threatening the Capalaba defence with some dangerous runs from Homer and Sludden.

Sludden’s energetic play was rewarded in the 58th minute when the skillful front-man disposed Capalaba defender Geoff Hurford before Rounding the Keeper and blasting home into an empty net to give the home side a much deserved 3-2 lead.

Taringa refused to take their foot off the pedal once they took the lead, with Sludden once again proving to be a handful for Capalaba.

Capalaba had one final chance to steal a point in the 89th minute however Darren Homer's long range shot was purely a final roll of the dice for the away side, Taringa Rovers cementing all three points and keeping their finals hopes alive.
