Brockie seals win for Newcastle Jets

Saturday, November 05, 2011

The Newcastle Jets have soared into second place after downing Perth Glory 2-0 at Ausgrid Stadium this afternoon.

Kiwi international Jeremy Brockie opened the scoring in the 9th minute for the home side, with a second goal to follow just minutes later, putting the Jets in an advantageous position in the first twenty.

Perth had their chances throughout the first half but were simply outclassed by a solid Jets back line and refreshed attacking formation, which included English striker Francis Jeffers after his visa was processed during the week.

Jets midfielder Jobe Wheelhouse's placement of the ball down the right wing allowed Brockie to weave his way into the box where he fired a blistering shot from an acute angle putting the Jets up 1-0

Just moments later Vukovic looked like a deer in headlights as Kasey Wehrman delicately placed the ball over the shoulder of Brockie, allowing him to swivel onto his right foot and smash the ball into the back net for a 2-0 lead.

The Jets were handed a get out of jail free card early in the 60th minute with an opportunity to close the gap from Shane Smeltz after a potent shot on goal, fired off the crossbar, much to his frustration.

Jets defender Taylor Regan was given the 'liverpool kiss' by Smeltz only two minutes later after an altercation between the two saw frustrations boiled over. Referee Stebre Delovski chose to deal with the headbutt on the pitch, issuing the players with a yellow card each.

The Jets’ attempts to put the game to bed were numerous in the second, with a sliding ball from Wehrman to Wheelhouse nearly delivering the goods. The ball offered the Jets skipper the chance to fire one off, point blanc to Glory goalkeeper Vukovic, who easily got a left hand to it, preventing the Jets from increasing their winning margin.

The hosts were able to hold on until full time, taking the three points and moving into second on the ladder behind Brisbane Roar.
