VPL Finals Week Two: Green Gully Cavaliers

Thursday, September 27, 2012

This weekend Green Gully Cavaliers take on Northcote City in what shapes up to be a ripping Victorian Premier League knock-out Minor Semi-Final final on Sunday 3pm at Green Gully Reserve.

Read the Northcote City preview here.

These two teams met only two weeks ago with Green Gully coming out 3-0 winners on the last day of the season. The three goals have been Green Gully's only goals in their last four outings.

Last Week:
Green Gully will host the Minor Semi-Final after being beaten by second place Oakleigh Cannons last week in the Qualifying Final 2-0. disappointing result for the Cavaliers but one that wasn't unexpected as the Cannons have been consistently good all season.

This Week:
A win for either side will see them play off in the Preliminary Final next week against the loser of the Major Semi-Final between Dandenong Thunder and Oakleigh Cannons. A loss and it's season over. A loss for Green Gully and they face the ugly prospect of being ousted in straight sets.

Why Green Gully will beat Northcote City:
Although they slipped up last week, they still have a very impressive recent finals record; something Northcote don't. The cool heads across the park will be enough to see Green Gully stay alive for another week in the VPL title race.

Why Green Gully won't beat Northcote City:
They have been kept scoreless in three of the last four outings. If Northcote can starve them of possession and manage to catch them on the counter it could very well be lights out for the Cavaliers.

Player to Watch:
Graeme Hockless was subbed off with twenty minutes to go last week to accommodate a three man midfield. I doubt this would have pleased the former VPL gold medallist and he will be the one to watch on Sunday.

Prediction:
Green Gully 2-1 Northcote City
