VPL Finals Week Two: Northcote City

Thursday, September 27, 2012

Northcote City defeated Bentleigh Greens 2-0 on Friday at Kingston Heath Soccer Complex to setup an intriguing Minor Semi Final match against defending champions Green Gully Cavaliers.

Read the Green Gully Cavaliers preview here.

Last Week:
In a must-win game against Bentleigh Greens, Northcote City came up victorious against the home side with a 1-0 win courtesy of a second half Milos Lujic header. The visitors dominated the early parts of the contest, however failed to make use of their chances as Bentleigh failed to assert themselves in the game. Northcote’s task became much tougher in the second half as Paul Savio was sent off early in the period. Despite the setback, it was City who scored the only goal of the game as Lujic's well-struck header beat Griffin McMaster with five minutes remaining.

This Week:
A win for either side will see them play off in the Preliminary Final next week against the loser of the Major Semi-Final between Dandenong Thunder and Oakleigh Cannons. A loss and it's season over.

Why Northcote will beat Green Gully:
Last week was not only a win to stay alive but also for confidence. Before Friday's result Northcote had only one victory in five games. With that win, Northcote will be quietly confident heading into Sunday's Minor Semi-Final against Gully. Also as stated last week, Northcote have no pressure heading into any Finals match; not many people expect them to make it far, therefore with the pressure off their shoulders an upset might just be on the cards.

Why Northcote will not beat Green Gully:
Not many teams get a chance at a three-peat, and with this in mind, Gully will be very aware of what is at stake this Sunday. The players will need no further motivation and will be desperate to extend their season another week. Northcote have also failed to beat Gully this season, losing their Round Eleven opener 3-0, while in the reverse fixture both sides had to settle for a 1-1 draw.

Prediction:
Green Gully 2-0 Northcote City
