10 goals in Saturday night football

Sunday, October 14, 2012

Well that was a special night of football. Five goals in Sydney. Five goals in Brisbane. As a Sydney FC fan the loss to the Jets was numbed in part by watching the drubbing Melbourne Victory got minutes later.

But to be honest I wasn't that upset to begin with, such was the quality of the football on offer at Allianz Stadium.

In only his second competitive game with the club Alessandro Del Piero lifted the Sky Blues to at times a beautiful calibre yet an outstanding Newcastle team had all the answers, led in no small part by Emile Heskey.

The 35 thousand witnesses to this match won't be able to stop themselves heading to ANZ Stadium on the 28th, or even to Parramatta for the derby this week. ANZ won't sell out, but Parra might. Get tickets

Up in Brisbane and Ange Postecoglou looks like Coach Taylor from Friday Night Lights circa season four. He's built a championship winning side and now returns with a new team - a motley crew of misfits - only to be hammered by a team still perfectly in tune with one another. Rado Vidosic is vindicated, as is Roar players midweek "In Rado We Trust" campaign.

Yes, it's too early to hark the season a success. There have been far too many false profits and us A-League fans are far too guarded to accept as much so readily. But the signs are there. And it's only Round Two.
