Deadly Dodd downs Jets in Perth

Friday, December 14, 2012

Perth Glory rediscovered their goal scoring touch as a brace from Travis Dodd set them on their way to a 3-0 win over the Newcastle Jets tonight.

The winger netted once in each half before Shane Smeltz added another from the spot as Glory cruised to their first win in six games in front of a crowd of 6967.

Both sides had their chances to score throughout the opening half but goalkeepers Danny Vukovic and Matthew Nash stood tall with some excellent saves.

It took until almost the final kick of the opening 45 minutes to see a goal when Travis Dodd pounced on a sloppy pass from Jets youngster Mitchell Oxborrow to run through and shot low past Nash.

Glory came out firing in the second half and their second just three minutes after the restart as Dodd again found the net, this time heading home a Liam Miller cross.

The Jets rarely threatened in the second half and when they did, their efforts were comfortably dealt with by Vukovic.

It wouldn't be an A-League game these days without a moment of controversy, and Ben Williams delivered right on cue as he awarded a penalty for a tackle by Mitchell on Smeltz.

The Kiwi striker picked himself up to make no mistake from 12 yards, putting the result beyond any doubt to send the Jets home empty handed for the second time in as many months.

As a side note to the win, Jacob Burns made it through 90 minutes without picking up a booking for the first time this season.
