It’s been an eventful debut season to say the least for A-League babies the Western Sydney Wanderers, but last night against Adelaide United, that hard work and persistence finally paid off at Parramatta Stadium.
In their opening 11 fixtures this season, the Wanderers had scored only eight goals, but any talk of their attack not being up to standards with the rest of the A-League was wiped clean with the home side scoring six goals against a side that pride themselves on defence.
It was a memorable night for the Wanderers, scoring three quarters of their seasons goal tally in last night's match. But Adelaide United coach John Kosmina believes his side gifted the Wanderers their goals with a dismal defensive effort.
“We let probably three terrible goals in. Two in the last couple of minutes in the first half and the fourth one was a shocker,” Kosmina said.
“You look at the desperation that they showed at the other end with block shots and put themselves in front of the ball. They won most of the one-on-one battles, the physical battles.”
Wanderers coach Tony Popovic was quick to praise his side's ability to stay in the fight for the full 90 minutes. An exuberant attacking performance from the Wanderers handing their coach an early Christmas present.
“Today was very pleasing because at different stages, even at 3-0 in the second half, we challenged the players to try and go on with the game and that’s always difficult,” Popovic said.
“To get another three goals in the second half was extremely pleasing for everyone at the club, and especially the coaching staff.”
