Western Sydney hit Adelaide for six

Friday, December 21, 2012

Christmas came early for the Western Sydney Wanderers with Santa bringing a bag of goals on a historic night at Parramatta Stadium.

The game was all but over at half time, the Wanderers playing United off the park to make the 6-1 score a true reflection of their dominance.

The Wanderers started the game with plenty of venom and were almost rewarded with a goal inside seven minutes through Dino Kresinger, only for the linesman to call the Croatian international offside.

Shinji Ono followed up with a shot just minutes later but failed to trouble goalkeeper Eugene Galekovic.

The men in red and black did not have to wait long for their reward. A crafty chip from midfielder Youssouf Hersi beat the last line of defence to hand Mark Bridge his third goal of the season on 18 minutes. Bridge made a half chance look easy with a right foot shot across the goalkeeper.

Dino Kresinger came agonisingly close to putting his side two goals up in the 27th minute. Kresinger held up two defenders inside the six-yard box but was well shut down by the United defenders.

Bridge inflicted more pain on United right on half time with yet again another goal. The striker turned defender Iain Fyfe inside-out to hammer home a goal with a left-foot shot across the face.

But the half had one more installment for the loyal home crowd. International marquee men Ono and Kresinger teamed up to work their magic inside the box, simply bamboozling the United defence. It was an Ono chip that allowed Kresinger to get above his opposite number and head home the Wanderers' third.

It was a case of déjà vu for Adelaide United as they conceded another early goal to open the second half. Despite having options inside and out, Ono backed himself and scored with a fierce right foot shot to hand his side a fourth goal.

Adelaide were shell shocked and never looked like troubling Wanderers goalkeeper Ante Covic. Hersi provided Mark Bridge with a personal hat-trick of goals in the 58th minute to more then double the striker’s goal tally for the season.

Tony Popovic opted to rest Ono and Kresinger for the remainder of the game and would have been disappointed with his side conceding a goal to Socceroo Dario Vidosic in the 68th minute.

The goal was nothing but a consolation for the away side. But the goal scoring didn’t end there for the Wanderers. Joey Gibbs scored in the 90th minute to rub salt into the wounds of the Adelaide players.
