Wanderers own Sydney tonight

Saturday, December 15, 2012

Can you name the player who thinks soccer is great,
smells like steak and is only thirty-eight..
Flare to meet you. Flare to meet you too. These were the scenes as the players walked onto the pitch for the second Sydney derby as emergency beacons were lit at both ends of the ground.

But only the Sky Blues had reason to call for help as the Wanderers fired first - twice unsuccessfully through La Rocca.

Then in the 24th minute Robin van Hersi turned spectacularly in the box, found the corner of the goal and gave the away side the 1-0 lead.

The goal led to another flare, thrown from the away support at their own 'keeper. Covic had no need for the coast guard though; he barely had to guard anything all night, coasting through the first half unnoticed.

26 176 decided Sydney should be given another chance, making the atmosphere at Allianz thunderous. Alright, twenty thousand. The rest packed into the Wanderers away bays to provide loud and entertaining active support.

One boy's desperate pleas for Del Piero to substitute on went unheeded until the 70th minute went Jason Culina made way for the Italian.

But not even Alé could save Sydney. A 77th minute Shinji Ono cross found Michael Beauchamp waiting at the backpost to slot it into the net for a second. 2-0 the final score and Wanderers can claim bragging rights around the city tomorrow morning.
