The Wanderers laid down the challenge earlier in the day climbing to the top of the table - albeit it temporarily - with their win over the resurgent Perth Glory.
Newcastle and Brisbane played out a 0-0 draw in terrible conditions that was lucky it was on Friday night so we had the whole weekend to forget it happened.
Across the ditch Adelaide gifted Wellington a point but put in two contenders for goal of the season in the process.
Lucas Neill finally made his A-League debut against the team he supposedly snubbed a week before; Melbourne Heart. Heart's largest non-derby home crowd were out to boo Neill's every touch, while also catching a glimpse of ADP, Griffiths and Emerton (what has happened to Emmo?). But the boys bringing the bling back to Sydney were no match for the home happy Heart.
These snuck under the Crossbar and into The Sack (Likes)
1. @CoreyGameiro's first A-League goal. He is a massive talent. @SimonOverall
2. Melbourne Heart at home. Joyful.
3. The Soundwave promoters response to the idiot that let off a flare at the gig. Take note FFA, Melbourne and Sydney clubs.
4. Central Coast Mariners. We love 'em.
5. Saucebottle-less stadiums.
6. Great goals. Some crackers this weekend - Carrusca the pick of the bunch.
7. 13,000 at the Heart game. See, you can do it.
What went over the Crossbar (Dislikes)
1. Fox Sports missing the Phoenix goal because they were stuck on a replay. @Patrick478
2. Story in the paper about MVFC fans missing a ticket to their AAMI Park Grand Final. What happened to one week at a time @Paul_football
3. "Lucas Rat" sign. He's still the captain of the Socceroos, show some respect.
4. No A-League sides putting up a Harlem Shake vid.
Too early to call:
The Grand Final will be played at Allianz Stadium.
Something we learned:
Melbourne Victory aren't that good.
Something we already knew:
The Mariners win at home, no matter what.
Something we would change:
Etihad Stadium mightn't be the best place to watch football, but it has a roof. We need one at every ground to protect from the sun and the rain.
Hero of the Week:
Michael McGlinchey. Scores a hat trick and its only half of his team's score.
Villain of the Week:
Danny McBreen. Misses a penalty in a 6-2 win.
Last week's prediction:
1. Luca$h Neill to score against Melbourne Heart and either not celebrate out of respect or pull a wad of hundreds from his sock and wave it at Aloisi, Didiluca and Munn. - NOT EVEN CLOSE
2. Sydney FC and Newcastle to beat Brisbane and Heart respectively, increasing the gap between top six and bottom four - NO
3. Shinji Ono to sign a contract extension and cap it off with a hat trick against the Glory. - I MEANT TO SAY MCGLINCHEY.
This week's prediction:
1. MVFC will lose their fourth match in a row. Has there been a side so reliant on one player in the history of the comp?
2. Wellington to get six points this week and have no rain at either of the home games.
3. The Mariners will bring an end to the Wanderers dream run.
