Crossbar: Football first please

Monday, March 25, 2013

With one week remaining the A-League is in great shape.

Every game this week has something riding on it and with a little luck it will go down to the last minute of the last game.

With a little more luck we could be seeing some massive games in the first week of the Finals Series too.

Melbourne Heart and Wellington have booked their end of season trips but for now its game on for everyone else. A grand finish to what has been a grand season.

These snuck under the Crossbar and into The Sack (Likes)

1. Josh Risdon's debut A-League goal. Special.
2. The final week is alive. Top spot, 3rd, 5th and 6th spot all up for grabs. The finals might not be everyone's cup of tea but it works.
3. The Sydney Derby - Great occasion, ok game.
4. Thomas Broich. Sensational goal.

What went over the Crossbar (Dislikes)

1. Only four games this weekend. To borrow a line from WWE newcomer Ryback "Feed. Me. More."
2. Perth Glory players going down like the stereotypical Asian sides in the last ten minutes. Trying to milk it more desperately than a farmer in drought.
3. Melbourne Hearts away record this season. Yuk!
4. Socceroos on a Tuesday? We're not halting the A-League so why not put it on over the weekend?
5. Stadium announcers asking the crowd to "Make some noise". #Manufactured.

Too early to call:

Victory can't win the Championship without Mark Milligan.

Something we learned:
Ivan Necevski either doesn't know how to set a wall or didn't realise Shannon Cole was a left footer.

Something we already knew:

Football deserves a better deal with ground quality. Both Brisbane and Melbourne had to play the day after their home ground was used for one of the throwing backwards codes. Shouldn't we play football on it first and let the others rip it up later?

Hero of the Week:

Liam Miller, what a display. And only 24 hours after I had left him out of my A-League All-Stars team; he sure showed me!

Villain of the Week:
Take your pick between Emerton or La Rocca. Both experienced players that should know better.

This week's prediction:

1. The Mariners will win the Premiers Plate and Arnie will declare them underdogs.
2. Many, many Easter references to be made over the weekend.

Last week's prediction:
1. The Wanderers will lift the Premier's Plate at home against Sydney FC this week. How sweet is that? WRONG, IT'LL NO HAPPEN IN NEWY.
2. We'll all be bored with only four games on. NUP, THIS WEEK WAS EXCITEMENT CENTRAL.
3. Melbourne Victory will be lucky to field a side against the Glory. CORRECT.
