With three wins from their last four games, the only defeat a credible 1-0 loss at table topping Western Sydney, hopes of claiming three points were high in the run up to the game.
However, Glory never really got going and were punished for some lacklustre defending as finishes from Paul Ifill, his first from open play this season, and Stein Huysegems gave the Nix a two goal lead.
Ryo Nagai’s 75th minute header gave Glory hope of salvaging at least a point but it wasn’t to be and they now sit in eighth spot on the ladder, three points outside the six.
Edwards was surprisingly upbeat after the game, despite the showing on the park, and has high hopes of claiming the necessary points needed in the final two games to secure finals football.
"Obviously a bit disappointed that we didn't get the three points today because we would have been in the six," he said. "All the other teams that were vying for the six lost also so it's still game on."
Even though they lost, Edwards felt Glory did enough to win the game as Nix goalkeeper Glen Moss pulled off some superb saves from Matias Cordoba, Shane Smeltz, Liam Miller and Travis Dodd at various points in the game.
"I suppose it balances out during the week because we probably didn't deserve to get the three points last week, probably did deserve it this week," said Glory’s interim boss.
Perth could have gone as high as fifth with a win yesterday but two “sucker punches”, as Edwards described them, means that Newcastle’s spot in the finals places is secure until at least the weekend.
However, the Jets have played a game more than those around them with their Round 26 game against the Nix having taken place at the end of February.
Glory’s final two games of the regular season are away to Melbourne Victory and home to Adelaide United.
Even though Victory will be without stars Archie Thompson, Mark Milligan and Marco Rojas on Saturday due to international duty, Edwards is still wary of a side that has been rejuvenated this season under Ange Postecoglou.
"Victory are a very, very good team, well coached and well drilled so it's going to be another massive challenge for us," he said.
"Obviously not having those three players in the team helps a little bit but they've got a really good squad and, like I said, are well coached and have some really good young players coming in so it's going to be a tough one."
Glory will also be down on numbers with Michael Thwaite and Smeltz included in the Socceroos and All Whites squads respectively, though Edwards hopes to have defender Steve Pantelidis back from a heel injury.
