Crossbar: A-League as good as Batman

Wednesday, November 06, 2013

Four rounds into season and we're finally getting into the groove. 16 goals in five games and plenty of chances that should have been converted (yeah looking at you Melbourne Heart) .

Brisbane look the goods and are flying under the radar with the 'big' sides Western Sydney and Victory making the headlines. The Heart and Sydney FC on the other hand are on struggle street, so much so that both boards have had to come out and give their coach their "full support".  Gulp!

Next week they will be playing for:
The Michael Beauchamp Mudflaps (protecting the back of the car)
The Leo Bertos Banana Peel
The Mark Birrighitti Milky Bar
The Fabio Flag
The Nick Fitzgerald Nickel-Plated Watch

Our big observation:

Justin Pasfield had the biggest blunder ever seen in the 9 years of the A-League (just beating the offside from a throw-in call) C'mon man that was piss easy.

These snuck under the Crossbar (likes)

•    Brisbane back on top of the table. Winning without Berisha and looking the goods at this early stage.
•    Monday Night football. Get rid of the 5:30 Saturday game.
•    Derbies. Manufactured or not, they are great.
•    nib Stadium. Looking a treat, deserving of a Socceroos game soon one would think.

What went over the crossbar (dislikes)

•   The offside call from the throw-in. Seriously, we are trying to gain the respect of the world and we serve up that!?
•   Polenz tackles. Two in two weeks, surely he can't be third time lucky.
•   Those who booed Carlos Hernandez. Shame on you.
•    Kevin Muscat in a suit. It just doesn't suit.
•    Heart on the road. Awful.
•    Harry Kewell missing. Has he really got gout? Isn't that for fat old beer drinkers?
•    The seagulls at Etihad Stadium. How freaking annoying were they?!

Ref Watch: Round Four
Okay, so 99% of your dislikes last year were referee related even when we said NO REFS, so we have added 'Ref Watch' this year and will try to be completely balanced in our appraisal.

Grade: D-

A horrible weekend for the officials. The non-offside call against Sydney was a stinker, Polenz not getting sent off amongst others in the WSW v Adelaide game and the offside from the throw-in call against Melbourne Heart were comical at best.

Last week's predictions

•      The Wanderers take the stage for Friday night football, Pirtek Stadium full to the brim, FoxSports goes into meltdown.
As usual Wanderland was full(ish) we're not going to claim this one.
•     Carlos Hernandez gets the greatest reception for an opposition player in the history of the game.           Unbelievably there were a handful there on Monday night who went down the booing path.                 Hernandez, ever so classy wore a message under his playing top thanking Victory fans for his time there.
•     The F3 derby ends up a 10 v 9 contest after three red cards are shown.
Nope, score was 2-2. Game was not bad at all
•     Kevin Muscat keeps his 100% winning coaching record alive prompting a betting agency to run a market on when he will lose for the first time and offer some money back if he gets sent to the stands in the process.

The betting agencies were too busy with the Melbourne cup on Tuesday, but its coming

Next week's predictions

•     Kevin Muscat continues his undefeated start with a win over Sydney FC
•     The Refs boss comes out and supports the refs after unother blunder filled round
•     James Troisi, celebrating his Socceroo call up scores another brace
•     WSW fans outnumber Heart fans at AAMI Park
