NPL New South Wales: Blacktown goalfest for Rd 1

Tuesday, March 18, 2014

The first round of the IGA NPL NSW Mens 1 competition kicked off in style this week, with a Grand Final rematch between reigning Champions Bonnyrigg White Eagles and Runners Up Rockdale City Suns. The opening weekend also saw the two Blacktown sides - Spartans and City - dominate their opposition.

It would be the in-form Rockdale who would claim honours in the rematch, taking a 2-0 win home with them. The Suns are undefeated in 2014, with the Preseason Cup silverware already in the trophy cabinet.

Sutherland 'keeper Andrew Depta making another save against Spartans.
Blacktown Spartans look the team to beat this year with the club spending big on players and the results justifying the spend. A 6-1 demolishing of Sutherland Sharks and only one defeat so far this year - to Rockdale in the Preseason Cup Final - means the Spartans are in good stead for the season ahead.

Blacktown City put early runs on the board with a 5-0 thrashing of South Coast Wolves at WIN Stadium. The new NPL venue looked the goods, but Wolves were unable to give the healthy home crowd a goal. City have flown under the radar in preseason, but are now certainly on opposition's sights.

Elsewhere in what is a traditional rivalry Sydney Olympic outplayed Sydney United 58 for a 2-0 win at Sydney United Sports Centre. Mens 1 newcomers, historic club St George Saints FC, drew two all with APIA Leichhardt Tigers at WIN Jubilee Oval in an entertaining fixture.
