Roar demolish embattled Jets

Friday, November 14, 2014

Brisbane Roar have claimed their first victory of the 2014/15 Hyundai A-League season, beating the Newcastle Jets 4-0 at Hunter Stadium on Friday night.

The victory relieves the pressure on the Roar squad and coach Mike Mulvey and heaped yet more pressure on the Jets boss Phil Stubbins and his wounded troops.

The Jets sink to the bottom of the ladder as the only team without a win this season.
Both managers made changes during the week with the Jets coach bringing in fit again former Socceroos Billy Celeski and Adrain Madaschi to replace right back Scott Neville (groin) and Andrew Hoole who was selected in the Socceroos squad.

Mike Mulvey was also forced to make changes to his squad with Matt McKay and James Donachie away on international duty and defender Jack Hingert suffering a knee injury, with Daniel Bowles, Devante Clut and Shannon Bray all promoted to first team duties.

The cracks within the Roar's ranks that seemed so apparent in their defeat to Melbourne City were all but gone as the Champions easily accounted for the struggling Newcastle outfit.

Roar striker Enrique was the star of the show scoring a hat trick after coming on early in the first half to replace the injured Jean Carlow Solorzano.

The Jets started the brighter of the teams and were nearly rewarded with an early goal as a searching David Carney cross aimed for Edson Montano was headed behind.

The Jets appealed for a penalty midway through the first half after a clearance from a Carney free kick struck Solorzano, but the referee turned it away.

Jets keeper Mark Birighitti denied the Roar the lead just minutes later after Brandon Borrello broke free from the offside trap.

Chances were few and far between in the first period but the Roar continued to gain the ascension and Thomas Broich found enough space on the edge of the box to fire just wide of the Jets goal.

The Roar took the lead just five minutes into the second half after Brisbane left back Shane Stefanutto got in behind the Jets backline and his low cross was converted by Henrique.

Brisbane grew in confidence and nearly doubled their lead when Dimitri Petratos made himself half a yard and fired past Birighitti's post.

The Roar were rewarded with a penalty just minutes later after Broich was brought down on a charging run in the Jets box.

Petratos stepped up to the spot but his low shot was saved by Birighitti to the roar of the home crowd.

But his heroics counted for nothing when the Roar went 2-0 after Herique fed the ball through the Jets back line for Steven Lustica to finish expertly.

Henrique continued his starring performance and his long range curling effort soared past Birighitti to make it 3-0 with just under 20 minutes to go.

The front man capped off an impressive evening by adding his third with only minutes remaining before full time.

Jet fans left in the stadium at the whistle let their team know they we're disappointed with their performance and booed them off the park.

The victory means the Roar move up to seventh place on the Hyundai A-League ladder, while the Jets fall to 9th spot just one place above cellar-dwellers the Western Sydney Wanderers

The win starts to relieve pressure on Mulvey and he will hope to continue the momentum into their match against Melbourne Victory at Etihad Stadium next Friday night.

While the embattled Jets are left to pick up the pieces and refocus on their away trip to face the Western Sydney Wanderers at Parramatta Stadium next Saturday.
