W-League: Wanderers finish season with loss

Tuesday, December 09, 2014

After conceding 27 goals in their home matches this season, the final part of the Western Sydney Wanderers W-League journey concluded with a 3 – 1 loss at home.

The match was a four-hour long thriller that endured rain, lightning and shine which really reflects the season the Wanderers women have had.

The game was forced to take a pause after only 15 minutes of play for half an hour due to increasing levels of lightning and thunder. Once the women returned to the field, however, it was Brisbane that were thundering through the Wanderers defence.

Katrina Gorry scored the opener for the Brisbane Roar shooting a ball from long-range that seemed to go through the Wanderers defence and effortlessly float into the back of the net.

Wanderers' Hannah Beard almost leveled minutes later but the ball couldn't get past Roar 'keeper Nadine Angerer

The Roar then masterfully added to their lead with Tameka Butt in the 42nd minute swerving behind the Wanderers defence beating Urquhart and slotting the ball into the net at the nearest post.

The Wanderers were then quick on the counter with multiple chances to add to the scoreboard but nothing eventuated from them.

Whilst the darker clouds began to roll onto the field, the first half concluded with the Roar leading 2 - 0.

After a 1 hour and 20 minute half-time break due to lightning the Westfield W-League match resumed play.

The long break seemed to have rejuvenated the Wanderers with Helen Petinos having a shot on goal that rebounded perfectly for Beard who missed a chance to convert an opportunity into a goal.

Wanderers finally contributed to the scoreboard with Keelin Winters assisting Helen Petinos to put pressure on the visitors.

Then, in the final minutes of the match Brisbane Roar pressed forward and it was Sunny Franco who put the game beyond reach for the Red & Black, knocking in after a goalmouth scramble..

The Brisbane Roar were the better side after the four hour match withstanding not only the force of the storm but also a second half Wanderers resurgence. 3-1 the final scoreline, Wanderers missing out on finals and finishing their season in last place.
