WASL: Perth's slump continues

Inglewood United 1-1 Western Knights

Finals aspirants Inglewood United and Western Knights shared the spoils after a 1-1 draw at 6PR Stadium. It was the home side that had the better of the opening 45, enjoying more possession and creating a number of opportunities. Youngster Jake Geddes opened the scoring in the 29^th minute on his first start for United, slotting into the bottom left hand corner after beating a Knights defender. Johny Mirco equalised for the Knights in the 55^th minute after breaking away from the United defence. The Knights finished the game stronger, but were unable to find the winning goal. It means both sides remain in pole position to finish in the top five.



Perth 1-4 Armadale

Armadale all but secured their spot in the Football West Premier League after smashing Perth 4-1 at Dorrien Gardens. Perth started the brighter of the two sides, but Armadale took the lead against the run of play. James Robinson delivered an inch perfect free kick onto the head of Steven McDonald in the 20^th minute. That gave Armadale the impetus and they doubled their advantage in the 40^th minute from the spot. Perth custodian Devon Spence brought down Matty Barlow. Robinson finished with aplomb. Perth dragged a goal back through Greg Sharland in the 79^th minute, but late goals from Matty Barlow in the 88^th minute and Ali Paredes in stoppage time capped an incredible day for the Reds. It is second placed Perth’s third consecutive three-goal defeat, leaving them with plenty of work to do before the finals.



ECU Joondalup 0-4 Sorrento

Sorrento comfortable disposed of ECU Joondalup 4-0 in the northern suburbs derby at ECU Joondalup Football Stadium A. It took the Gulls just 20 seconds to find the net, with Todd Harnwell finishing after a long ball over the top. Dejan Gurovski doubled his side’s lead in the 42^nd minute after some good work by Jared Love. A handball from ECU’s Scott Bushby in the 58^th minute presented Love with an opportunity from the spot, which he coolly converted past ECU custodian Curtis Aspden. Gurvoski finished the job with a header in stoppage time after a Danny Cain cross. It means Sorrento move into third position on the table, while ECU risk finishing as low as 10^th.



Bayswater City 5-1 Floreat Athena

Bayswater City kept their slim finals hopes alive with a superb 5-1 victory at home to Floreat Athena at Frank Drago Reserve. The league’s leading marksman Gustavo Marulanda opened the scoring in the 8^th minute. The Colombian had more chances before finding the back of the net again in the 40^th minute. Gavin Knight slotted City’s third on the stroke of half-time after a good pass from Fransisco Jorquera. Two fine goals from John Kearney in the 66^th and 70^th minute gave Bayswater a five goal advantage. A James Isaia thunderbolt from 25 yards was the consolation for Floreat. Both sides will need to win their remaining three fixtures to give themselves the best chance of making the finals.



Mandurah City 1-0 Cockburn City

Mandurah City defeated Cockburn City 1-0 in a clash between the bottom two sides at Hyundai Stadium. A goal from Rafa Insurralde in the 34^th minute was all that separated the two sides. But the task for both sides to stay up is nigh on impossible. Mandurah City will need to win their one remaining game, while Cockburn City will need to win all of their remaining three. In addition, they will also need Armadale to lose their remaining four fixtures.
