In an expected move by the Newcastle Jets, Gary van Egmond has been announced as Branko Culina’s replacement as head coach of the Hyundai A-League club after signing a two-year contract.
The appointment to the position marks van Egmond’s return to the club after his stint as coach in 2006-09, steering the Jets to a 1-0 win over F3 rivals the Central Coast Mariners in the 2007/08 Grand Final.
Jets chief executive Robbie Middleby believes all members, fans and corporate partners would welcome the return of van Egmond.
“We had a short list of excellent applicants but in a purely objective process, Gary scored high in all the important criteria,” Middleby said.
Interim coach and former central defender for the Jets, Craig Deans, will continue his stint as interim coach as the Jets head into Sunday’s F3 Derby against the Central Coast Mariners, with van Egmond set to assume control at Monday’s recovery session.
