Team of the Week: Round 4

The Football Sack's Team of the Week changes shape this week as not one club managed to keep a clean sheet. 20 goals were scored across the five games with Brisbane’s seven the most substantial. It’s the most goals in a week by far and we’ve adapted to this high scoring weekend suitably, choosing a 3-4-3 formation.

Goalkeeper
Ante Covic makes another return to my team of the week. Wellington dominated in the first half of their game with Victory, but they failed to find the net. This was largely due to poor finishing along with Covic being an immovable force in that opening 45 minutes. It set the base for Melbourne to go and grab the three points.

Defence
The three man defence this week features Matt Smith, Simon Colosimo and Pascal Bosschaart. All conceded only one goal this week and had generally imposing games. Smith was very good in Brisbane’s massive win – both in defence and when in possession.

Colosimo and Bosschaart both played in the Melbourne Heart – Sydney FC game and dominated the opposition attack. Bosschaart ended up playing the ball that led to the Sky Blues very late equaliser.

Midfield
Paul Beekmans anchors the midfield. His performance for Gold Coast against the Jets was dominant and he won his place over Erik Paartalu (the reason being Beekmans was by far the best in Gold Coast’s midfield and vital to their win, while Paartalu was just one of many good performers).

Mitch Nichols and Thomas Broich are the other two central midfielders. They teamed up well and tore Adelaide apart. Insanely dominate team and player performance from these two.

Attack
Bernie Ibini-Isei is placed in the midfield here, but his explosive and dynamism would have him making runs forward from in behind. The young gun scored what ended up being the winner for the Mariners in their 2-1 victory over Perth, and he showed he has a big future.

Archie Thompson and Maceo Rigters are on the flanks this week. Both scored from wide positions and had great games. Thompson was clinical with his finish to give Victory the lead after being dominated, and continued with a good second half (only robbed of a second goal by a terrible offside call). Rigters added a lot to Gold Coast’s attack with his inside runs and bullet distance shots.

A no brainer with the striker here. Besart Berisha scored a hattrick in six minutes and added a fourth later on in the best solo performance of the season so far. This striker looks an absolute star and at this rate, will tear up the A-League.
