The Nix started the game off strongly, with majority of the
first half being played in the opposition half. They came out fighting and showcased a team who really
wanted those vital first three points.
With many of the team putting on the majestic yellow and black for the first time, four players missing with All-White commitments and three more M.I.A, this was a game showing only a taste of what the Phoenix can offer. They played a great short passing game - something that has not always been a strong point - and made good gains up the field when they had possession.
In the midfield the combination of Manny Muscat and Carlos Hernandez looked promising; the two played together flawlessly in the first half though Hernandez unfortunately failed to keep the pace in the second half. It was Hernandez' first full 90 minute game for a few weeks so the drop in performance is excusable.
The positive first half play led to a goal from Stein Huysegems who scored fantastically from a well placed pass. With this the intensity rose, as did the aggressive nature of the game.
Whatever was said in the Roar
changing room at half time worked and the team came out in full force, scoring
a goal within the first two minutes of the restart. The equaliser rattled the Phoenix and
simple errors crept in; careless passing their main downfall.
The gap Louis Fenton usually fills at right back became apparent and with newcomer Reece Caira showing significant signs of distress the Roar attacked down his flank. This relentless attacking finally gave reward in the last two minutes of the game to give Brisbane the 2-1 win.

Despite a game of high
aggression and most of the Nix
midfield receiving yellows, surprisingly no red cards were issued.
Kenny Cunningham unfortunately put in a disappointing performance and was subbed off in the second half after not really showing much of anything. Conversely, experienced defender Ben Sigmund’s high work rate was standout.

Coach Ernie Merrick was philisophical on the outcome of the match.
"[It] was a very important description of where we are going. Despite the result, I have to say I was very impressed with the boys."
It might not be the season opener the club hoped for but Phoenix will take away several positives. A mixed bag of season debuts will have optimists happy with their sides first jaunt whilst pessimists could be left feeling uncertain.
