Horror week for Jets continues with loss to Roar

It has been a week to forget for a club begging the public for a fresh start. Newcastle Jets just wanted to get back to playing football this round, however desire and reality are two separate things.

A 2-1 loss at home to Brisbane Roar will do nothing for the fans of the club, many of whom didn't show up at Hunter Stadium tonight for what was the first game in the Hyundai A-League's 'Play Football' Round.

It was almost the perfect story for Newcastle Jets, who leveled a 1-0 deficit in the 72nd minute to set up an aggressive final 20 minutes from the home side.

Pressing for only their second win of the season, the Jets took it to the Roar, who had scored easily in the first half through Solorzano.

However it wasn't to be, and in extra time a returning Thomas Broich found the win for Brisbane, tapping in to put a dagger through the heart of the less than seven thousand in attendance.

The Jets had the opening chance of the match, with Edson Montano leaping high from a corner and hitting the crossbar with his effort.

Zenon Caravella zipped and zapped, whilst Mitch Cooper had several opportunities throughout the match.

Brisbane Roar were the first to add to the scorecard though and it was Solorzano who made it look very easy. The Costa Rican midfielder jinked the ball into the net from a Thomas Broich corner, giving Roar the lead in the 35th minute.

And it was a scoreline that would remain until the 72nd minute, when Radovan 'Roadvan' Pavicevic was released on an individual run that saw him pass Corey Brown and put the ball in the net, giving Jets some hope.

Roar were typically saved by a Broich strike deep in extra time, but were not their usual selves. They'll need to offer more for next week's game against the Central Coast, a game which always sees the Mariners lift.

Newcastle's sweeping changes won't change a team overnight, and it's clear the team are still in need of development. Nathan Tinkler won't be happy, but at least the debts are paid.
