WWC Quarter Final: Canada

Saturday, June 27, 2015

An opening day win is all Canada have had to cheer about in front of an impressive fan base but they're still in with a chance.

The Story So Far

Canada opened the World Cup with a very confident win over China displaying their impressive defence which has proved to be crucial for where they are now. Their remaining group stage results saw two draws, against New Zealand and the Netherlands respectively.

These results placed them at the very top of Group A and they walked into the Round of 16 with a Josee Belanger goal securing the 1-0 victory against Switzerland.

Yet their next opponent will be their biggest challenge in this World Cup.

They'll beat England because...

Canada are the hosts of the tournament and tickets have completely sold out for the match. The home team can be assured that they have the support of the entire stadium behind them and this has the obvious advantages. If Christine Sinclair has a great game, the veteran has the influence to change the game and Canada's defence will certainly hold against the physicality of the English team.

They'll be knocked out by England...

Canada have been struggling to score clean goals and have progressed so far only because of their great defence. England are a very physical team and can play fast for extended periods of time which may exhaust Canada. England are also a very intelligent team, which is of credit to their coach Mark Sampson, who can be very liberal when it comes to using different players and modifying formations during the game.

Will Canada win the World Cup?

Yes. A victory against England will give them the momentum to go all the way to the finals of the World Cup and win.

Best moment of the tournament so far?

Their opening day win against China.

Key Player

Christine Sinclair has been hot and cold during this tournament and will be the key player for Canada as she has risen to the occasion when it has mattered the most.

Sinclair has had glimpses of 'individual brilliance' seen more recently with her assist in the goal of Round 16 but it is just a case of getting her groove on and if she does this against England, we are sure to be in for a great game!
