WWC Quarter Final: China

Friday, June 26, 2015

China are one of three Asian teams to make it to the quarter finals of the World Cup. With Australia taking on Japan in one match guaranteeing at least one Asian team in the semis, can China make it two?

The Story So Far

China didn't have the most confident run into Round 16 from the group stage which saw them lose 1-0 to the hosts, surprisingly win 1-0 over the Netherlands and then draw against New Zealand.

Despite not having their Coach Hao Wei on the sidelines for the Round of 16 after he was suspended due to an incident during the match against New Zealand, China scored very early in the match from a corner and held onto the lead for the entirety of the match against Cameroon thus heading into the quarter finals.

They'll beat the USA because...

The USA will be losing two of their midfielders, Megan Rapinoe and Lauren Holiday due to suspension and China's coach returns back to the sidelines. With these elements in the match there is a little bit of glimmering hope for China to somehow manage to beat the USA.

Without these two key players, the USA will be forced to play a different style of football and will be relying on other players who haven't had as much experience in the World Cup to control the flow of the match and get the job done.

China being a very defensive team must capitalise on the suspension of these two key players and must improve their offense as they aren't good at it. If for some miracle they do improve over night, they are in with a chance.

They'll be knocked out by the USA...

Because they are the USA. Regardless of missing two key players, due to their high quality team they can almost survive any match (and the apocalypse for that matter) if their starting eleven are missing from the match. It is wishful thinking that the two replacements for these players are poor enough to give China a decent advantage.

Can China win the World Cup?

No.

Best moment of the tournament so far?

Their 1-0 win against the Netherlands is still their best moment in the tournament so far as they finally worked together as a team and had some planned attack.

Key Player

The key player for China in their upcoming match will be Wang Shanshan who endlessly proved herself in the group stage and Round 16. She is the only confident attacking force China have and she can assist in creating chances for China to try and defeat the USA.
