Could it get any worse?

It was a disappointing end to a wonderful campaign from both the club and it's supporter group, but Gold Coast United were not to have the fairytale ending it so desperately needed.

Less than twenty minutes into the clash at Skilled Park referee Chris Beath called a halt to proceedings due to the weather. It was the right decision - the downpour of rain too much for the pitch' drainage system.

“We couldn’t be more disappointed that we’ve had weather like this on today of all days,” said Gold Coast CEO Clive Mensink.

“But our thanks goes to everyone who came out today and they should all retain their tickets to receive the $5.00 discount on tickets to our match against Perth on January 3rd" he added.

The unfortunate weather could not have come at a worse time for the club, with many seeing this game as the stepping stone for a revival in active support, community engagement, crowd numbers, and the like.

The approximately ten thousand fans who did brave the conditions did not receive their money's worth, so to speak. Despite being a free event, attendees will again be left disillusioned with the club. Noone is at fault, but there is a feeling a major chance to win over the public has been lost.

“I want to pay tribute to everyone who came out to the stadium today. It was very encouraging and it showed that the support is out there. It was a brilliant turn out under the extreme circumstances,” said GCU coach Miron Bleiberg after the match.

Will these fans receive a free ticket when this game is replayed? This remains a mystery. What is more pressing is whether or not this evening's anticlimax will have a negative effect on the club's target supporter base, despite the club's (and the Beach's) best intentions.
