And the window is now shut!

Tuesday, February 01, 2011

Another European transfer window has come and gone producing a number of shocks and a couple of signings which deserve to be questioned.

After a long saga, it appears Fernando Torres has officially signed with Chelsea FC after Liverpool FC accepted their 50 million pound offer. Although some fans might be upset with this move, a number of Liverpool supporters will be happy to see the injury prone and temperamental striker on his way.

It was rather obvious that F.Torres was going to leave after only training with Liverpool's Head of Fitness and Conditioning, Darren Burgess, for half an hour. It is reported that F.Torres will sign a five and a half year deal with Chelsea.

The other big signing made by Chelsea this window is the purchase of former Benfica FC defender David Luiz. At only 23 years of age and four national team caps with Brazil, he will boost the backline and is a player to watch.

When 'King' Kenny Dalglish returned to Liverpool, changes were always going to happen; already there has been the departure of Ryan Babel to TSG Hoffenheim and the loan of Paul Konchesky to Notthingham Forest.

The first player to be signed by Liverpool this window was Luis Suarez from Ajax. Arguably best known for biting another player during a match, Suarez should fit in well at the club. He will wear the no.7 jersey which has been worn by former Liverpool 'greats' such as Harry Kewell and Robbie Keane.

News is also in that Andy Carroll has officially signed a five and a half year deal with the red side of Mersey. He'll take the no.9 jersey and at the age of just 22, and is yet another player to keep an eye on for the future.

Loan deals this window has proved to be a big thing, the biggest of these deals include Birmingham's deal to bring Obifemi Martins back to the Premier League after his time in Russia with FC Rubin Kazan. Heading to Blackpool is former Stoke City's forward, James Beattie who has had a quiet start to the season at Rangers in the Scottish Premier League.

Newcastle fans will see Stephen Ireland in their midfield for the rest of this season after leaving Aston Villa. Arguably the biggest loan deal, however, goes to Bolton who have secured Chelsea's 21 year old centre forward, Daniel Sturridge. This signing will boost Bolton's attack of Kevin Davis and Johan Elmander.

After picking up Rafael van der Vaart in the final seconds of last summer's transfer window, Tottenham have made a few surprise bids which seem to be mainly for giggles. Harry Redknapp is rumoured to have approached Everton captain Phil Neville as well as one of the most wanted man in England at the moment, Blackpool's Charlie Adams. Both deals have been rejected.

However, just because the window is closed doesn't mean that some deals haven't been made. In the past contracts such as Robinho's move to Manchester City, Berbatov to Manchester United and Fellaini to Everton have been signed and it was not made public for a couple of hours. Anything is possible, making the next day very interesting for football in Europe.
